I will be eternally baffled at how this didn't make her top five for today. Talk about right place, right time.
In case you may have been wondering. No, I didn't take this picture. She did.

you know, in my opinion, the "coincidence" of right place/right time is really an illusion--although fortunate accidents do occasionally happen, the majority of good photos are a function of the photographer's deliberate choices. yes, a lot of people could hypothetically "get" most shots (assuming they know a few basics about shutter speed, aperture, etc.), but a lot of photography is premeditated positioning, and most folks don't seem to know where and how to stand/sit/lie. for example, when photographing something like the changing of the guard, rather than standing behind the kid in the orange t-shirt just because he's centered, why not stand off to the side, where no one impedes your view, and where you can make cleaner (and usually more interesting/original) photos? (yes, my sweet little protege, i am bestowing wisdom upon you in a big way. i'll stop now.)
the changing of the guard is one of the very cool things to learn about and see in d.c.
Yes, I would have to agree with you. This definitely should have been in the best of the day photos.
I really like, and admire, the discipline and committment these young soldiers have. They are largely responsible for the aura of Arlington.
yes, your wife is da bomb. (i would also like to put in a plug for second wife - she's pretty cool, too) i would love to see you in that uniform - bed you would look way cool. especially if you shaved with your cool orange-scented soaps, I might add.
@mari: the 3rd Infantry Division (specifically the Tomb Guard) was one of my aspirations while I was in the Army, despite the fact that I was never a fan of dress uniforms.
It's just too bad I wanted to go on a mission and ended up as a mechanic in the Reserve instead...
Great choice of picture, Alex.
Thanks for the tutorial, Nicole. I'm so grateful that you know this stuff and allow us all to benefit from you knowledge.
